Privacy Next Calls for Enhanced Data Sharing Cooperation with non-EU Countries

On 06/10/2026, Privacy Next was pleased to address an informal gathering of Justice & Home Affairs diplomats from various non-EU Missions, kindly hosted by Scotland and organised by Northern Ireland. Other Missions represented included the UK, Canada, Japan and Switzerland.

The general topic for discussion was data protection in the EU and developments affecting third countries, particularly in relation to cross-border police and judicial cooperation.

One of the specific topics discussed was the current review of the 2016 Law Enforcement Directive and the anticipated call for greater cooperation with third countries in the fight against cross-border organised crime and terrorism.

The audience heard Privacy Next encourage all non-EU countries to strengthen their law enforcement and judicial cooperation channels with the EU, through the use of data adequacy assessments/decisions, Passenger Name Record (PNR) agreements and bilateral data sharing agreements, to ensure that operational needs and the protection of personal data are fully optimised in pursuing such important objectives.
